Student initiated research:
University policy requires that student initiated research involving human subjects, whether dissertation, thesis, or other type of research project,
must be supervised by a Brandeis University faculty member to insure compliance with procedures and federal regulations relating to the protection of human subjects.
In order to submit an application, the signature of the faculty sponsor is required on all research where the student is identified as the principal investigator.
This signature verifies that the research has been reviewed by the department and is in compliance with federal and Brandeis University policies.
Students list themselves as "Principal Investigator" on the Research Review, Continuation, and Modification forms, and must include their "Faculty Sponsor" information where indicated. All forms are signed by both parties. Missing signatures will result in the application being returned without review.
A student initiated application includes a signed Faculty Sponsor Assurance in addition to the Investigator Assurance. Both forms describe what the assurance covers.
As the sponsor, the faculty member is included in all communication throughout the life of the application process and the duration of the approved protocol.
Revisions to applications:
After an application has been reviewed it may require revisions to one or more sections. A memo will be emailed detailing the revisions required.
Changes to the protocol, informed consent forms, information sheets, interview scripts etc should be made directly to the document (not in an email),
highlighted for the reviewer(s), and resubmitted electronically for review. Some minor changes may be resolved via email on an individual basis. If the
investigator is unsure about the format, they should contact the IRB Administrator for more information.
