Meet the Chair
Malcolm Sherman, a graduate of Cornell University, is vice chairman of Gordon Brothers Group LLC, an advisory, restructuring and investment firm specializing in the retail, consumer products, real estate and industrial sectors. He is former chairman and chief executive officer of Ecko Group Inc., Morse Shoe Co., Regina Co., Channel Home Centers and Zayre Stores, has served as chair of Brandeis’ Board of Trustees since May 2007. Sherman joined the board in 1981 while serving as chair of the Board of Fellows.
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees, composed of up to 50 elected members, is responsible for and is the final authority on all aspects of the university's operations. The specific functions of the Board of Trustees are reflected by the standing committees of the Board: Academic Affairs; Audit; Budget and Finance; Development; Executive; Honorary Degrees; Investment; Health Services; Nominating and Governance; Personnel, Compensation and Ethics; Physical Facilities; and Students and Enrollment.
The Board of Trustees selects the president of the university, who is responsible solely to the board. In addition to the members, the board also includes four faculty and three student representatives. Ex officio members include the chair of the Fellows, the president of the National Women's Committee, and the president of the Alumni Association.
The officers of the board include chair, vice chairs, treasurer and secretary. The Board of Trustees began in 1947 with George Alpert as its first chair.
