TIM: My name is Tim Hickey and I'm a professor of Computer Science at Brandeis.
TIM: So the idea behind the App Design program is that we bring in students and in two weeks we teach them everything they need to know to build an interactive database-backed reactive web application, in a team of typically around six students.
Video on screen: Reflection of a students face on a laptop screen.
Video on screen: Students sitting together looking at a laptop.

TIM: And then they go and present their ideas to Google.
Video on screen: Group of students standing in front of a white board wearing name tags.
TIM: Our focus is on App Design because it's the area of computer science that you can have the most impact with the least previous experience.

EDEN: When you're coding on your own, it's often very hard to find answers.
I'm often stuck in this situation where I can't find the exact, right piece of information I need, whereas here there are tons of teens who are willing to help me, who know what I'm going through and can give me the exact answer that I need.

Text on screen: Iyassu K. Pelham, AL
IYASSU: So when I first got here, I thought I'd learn a lot about html more than anything, coding, but more than that, I learned about teamwork and friendship because there are random people I've never seen them before.
Video on screen: Iyassu stepping off a bus.
Video on screen: Iyassu sitting in front of a laptop.
Video on screen: Iyassu sitting in a classroom.
At first, like, we couldn't come up with anything, but we started communicating and in a minute we were like boom, boom, boom.
Video on screen: Iyassu sitting with a group of students in a classroom.
Now I have friends that I will talk to forever, ya know.
TIM: The United States is in dire need of computing professionals.
Video on screen: Professor giving a presentation with a screen behind him.
There are projections that over the next decade we're going to have a million new jobs created in the computer science domain and I think this is something that could be very attractive to students, especially high school students, and maybe motivate them to pursuing a computer science major when they get in college.

It's a wonderful feeling about being able to create something which could have an impact on the world.
