June 27 – 29, 2009
Israel Studies Institute *Special institute for invited academic leaders
Faculty: S. Ilan Troen, President Jehuda Reinharz
Keynote Speaker: Amb. Daniel C. Kurtzer
This special institute seeks to introduce senior academic leaders to the new scholarly field of Israel Studies. Historical, political and cultural aspects of Israel will be explored, as well as the many contradictions and complexities of the modern state. The institute will offer participants an opportunity to hear from the experts, ask questions, and grapple with the academic issues in a small group of peers.
Our purpose is to foster a greater understanding of a new scholarly discipline through this experience. The program will begin with a welcome dinner followed by a cultural outing to Shakespeare and Company’s production of Hamlet. The next day will consist of academic sessions with a special evening keynote address by Amb. Daniel C. Kurtzer. Sessions will be held the morning of Monday, June 29th and we will conclude the program following lunch. All meals, lodging, materials and tickets are provided. Please contact Alyson Saykin, asaykin@brandeis.edu or Michaele Whelan with questions about your invitation mwhelan@brandeis.edu.
