The Education Program at Brandeis offers opportunities at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
Undergraduate Level
Undergraduates may elect one of four education minors:
- Teacher Education: Preschool
- Teacher Education: Elementary
- Teacher Education: Secondary
- Education Studies
The Teacher Education minor includes the study of children and youth, school and society, and subject-specific pedagogy. The program is dedicated to preparing teachers who combine academic accomplishment, passion for teaching, commitment to social justice, and love of learning. Coursework on campus is integrated with field experiences in area schools, culminating in a semester of supervised student teaching.
A "Brandeis teacher" can tackle the challenges of teaching in inquiry-based classrooms, is a proponent of balanced literacy, and maintains high standards of success. Successful completion of program requirements, including those established by the State of Massachusetts, qualifies students for the initial license to teach.
A minor in Education Studies enables students to investigate educational history and policy and the place of schooling in families and in society from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. It does not lead to a teaching license.
Graduate Level
For graduate students, we offer the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) for elementary and secondary school teaching candidates. In the MAT program, we conceive of teaching as practical intellectual work dedicated to the enlargement of human capacity at the individual and societal level. Three concentrations are available:
