Howie enjoys working with students doing independent study, EEC public policy, special educational needs, early literacy, administration and social emotional learning/conflict studies. Howie has done research of inclusion in the UK, Canada and the US and has been invitied to speak and assist teachers in China, Italy, and France and the U.K.
Since 1979, Howie has been Executive Director of the Lemberg Children’s Center at Brandeis University, and our director for the early education and care teacher preparation program. He taught Teaching Strategies for Early Childhood and currently supervises student teachers. This winter Howie is teaching early literacy at West Virginia University for the State of West Virginia Pre K Initiative and EDC. In May 2007 he was a guest of the Chinese Early Education Foundation to present teaching strategies for social emotional learning in Beijing and Shanghai. Howie also is on the board of directors of the Campus Child Development Laboratories Administrators Association and chairs the panel rewriting Lab School program standards.
During the 1980s, he served as Vice Chair of the Advisory Council on Early Childhood to the Massachusetts Board of Education. He has been a research associate at the Starr Center for Mental Retardation and the Family and Children's Policy Center at Brandeis University and an advisory board member of the International Center for Ethics, Justice and Public Life. His awards have included a National Institute of Health Training Fellowship for the study of public policy and supports for people with special needs, along with ones from the Massachusetts Association of Day Care Agencies and the Boston Association for the Education of Young Children.Certified as a teacher in Massachusetts for preschool, elementary, middle and high schools in English, Social Science, Communication Skills, Speech and Theater, he provides in-service development for educators at all levels. He has degrees from Emerson College, Boston College, Brandeis University and the Family Institute of Cambridge.
