Cynthia Ballenger is currently a reading specialist at the Martin Luther King Open School, a Cambridge Public School with a strong commitment to social justice.  She works with children in 1^st grade through 8^th and coordinates literacy professional development for teachers at this school.

She was a founding member of the Brookline Teacher Research Seminar, a seminal group in the development of teacher research in the last 25 years.  She was also a long-standing member of the Cheche Konnen Teachers Seminar, a group devoted to finding better ways to learn science through both reading and doing; this group in addition has a particular interest in exploring ways to take advantage of the knowledge of immigrant and minority students in science and literacy. 

Her publications include three books: Teaching Other People’s Children (Teachers College Press, 1998) , a book about early literacy and culture; Regarding Children’s Words (Teachers College Press, 2003) , an edited book of papers from the Brookline Teacher Researcher Seminar; and her current work, Puzzling Moments, Teachable Moments (Teachers College Press, 2009). 

Her first book received the Outstanding Writing award from the Association of Colleges of Teacher Education.  She has served on the board of Practitioner Research Grants for the Spencer Foundation and in various capacities for the International Conference of Teacher Research.

The event begins at 4:00pm followed by light refreshments. During this event, Cynthia Ballenger's latest book, Puzzling Moments, Teachable Moments (Teachers College Press, 2009) will be available for sale. The author will be signing copies.
