Two-Year MA Program in Computational Linguistics
The two-year MA program in computational linguistics is designed for outstanding students, preferably with an undergraduate degree in linguistics, computer science, or the study of language. The MA provides a solid foundation for professional work in the field of computational linguistics, or pursuit of a PhD in computational linguistics or theoretical linguistics.
In the first year, students take COSI 114b, along with a schedule of courses determined in conjunction with the Director of Graduate Studies, and chosen according to each student's individual academic background. The schedule is chosen from COSI background courses including COSI 11a, COSI 12b, COSI 21a, LING 131a, and LING 160b; and LING background courses including LING 120b, LING 130a, LING 115a, and LING 125b.
The second year then consists of five advanced courses in computational linguistics, including COSI 134a, COSI 217b, three courses chosen from COSI 112a, COSI 135b, and COSI 216a, plus either an internship in computational linguistics or a master’s thesis. The master’s thesis must be deposited electronically to the Robert D. Farber University Archives at Brandeis.
Residence Requirement
The minimum residence requirement is two years.

Combined BA/MA Program in Computational Linguistics
The five-year BA/MA degree program in computational linguistics is designed for outstanding Brandeis undergraduate students who will have completed all requirements for the undergraduate BA or BS degree within four years, with a major preferably in either language and linguistics or computer science. Eligibility for the program is normally limited to students who have maintained a minimum 3.500 GPA in all linguistics and computer science courses taken.
Students complete the MA in computational linguistics by taking course requirements as an undergraduate, and in one additional (fifth) year of study. The MA degree provides a solid foundation for professional work in the field of computational linguistics, or for additional graduate study in computational linguistics or theoretical linguistics. Ideally, students should apply to the Program by the end of the junior year.
Students admitted to the program must fulfill the following requirements, in addition to completing their BA or BS. During the undergraduate years, students will take a set of background courses in linguistics and computer science, determined in consultation with the Director of Graduate Studies, along with COSI 114b. The fifth year will then consist of five advanced courses in computational linguistics, including COSI 134a, COSI 217b, three courses chosen from COSI 112a, COSI 135b, and COSI 216a, plus either an internship in computational linguistics or a master’s thesis. The master’s thesis must be deposited electronically to the Robert D. Farber University Archives at Brandeis.
