The Jane's Essay Prize is awarded annually to an undergraduate student who writes the best paper in Latin American and Latino studies. It carries a $500 cash prize.
Eligibility Guidelines (2012-2013)
The competition is open to undergraduates in all concentrations and classes at Brandeis University. Submissions are limited to one paper per student.
Papers must have been written between May 1, 2012, and April 19, 2013, in any area of Latin American, Caribbean or Latino studies. Any substantial research paper may be submitted, including term papers, two-term senior theses or one-semester senior essays. The paper may be written in English or Spanish.
A committee of faculty members in the Latin American and Latino Studies Program will select the winner of the competition. The award will be based on:
- Quality of the research
- Originality of the analysis
- Clarity of the writing
The winner will be announced on May 2, 2012.
Deadlines and Submission
Deadline for submission is April 19, 2013 at 9 a.m.. Papers written after May 1, 2012 may be submitted any time before the deadline; early submission of papers is appreciated. Professors may also submit their students' papers for the competition.
Submissions should be sent to the administrator of the Latin American and Latino Studies Program, MS 036. If you wish to drop off the paper in person and the Latin American and Latino Studies office (Olin-Sang 218) is closed, please leave it at the Department of History office (Olin-Sang 215). Papers will not be accepted by e-mail or fax and should not be bound.
