Master of Arts in Teaching: Jewish Day Schools

ROLLING ADMISSIONS for summer 2008 are under way -- APPLY NOW

In this small, personalized program, coursework and fieldwork inform one another. Students pursue a challenging curriculum combining Jewish studies and education studies with an intensive internship that serves as a context for learning to teach. Students study with members of the Jewish day school cohort as well as with members of the public school MAT cohort.

The four-semester, full-time program begins with a five-week summer session, includes an academic year of study and an internship in a Jewish day school, and concludes with an additional five-week summer session. Students spend much of the academic year learning to teach in a local day school under the guidance of skilled mentor teachers and Brandeis teacher educators.

Program faculty and instructors include distinguished teacher educators, and scholars of Bible, Hebrew, and Jewish literature, and are drawn from the Brandeis Education Program, the Department of Near Eastern and Judaic Studies, and the Mandel Center for Studies in Jewish Education.

Elementary M.A.T. (DeLeT)

The Elementary MAT (DeLeT) program, formerly known as the DeLeT Fellowship program, prepares beginning Jewish day school teachers for grades one through six, and serves as a site for studying the goals, curriculum, and impact of Jewish teacher education. Students earn a Master of Arts in Teaching in elementary education and are eligible for initial teaching licensure (grades 1 - 6) from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Secondary M.A.T. (Bible) prepares students to teach Bible in grades 9 - 12 and to contribute to the informal curriculum of Jewish day high schools. The Gann Academy - The New Jewish High School of Greater Boston serves as the partner day school for the program. Students earn a Master of Arts in Teaching in secondary education. There is no state licensure for teaching Bible.
