Overview


The four-semester, full-time program of professional study begins with a five-week summer session, includes an academic year of study and an internship in a middle or high school classroom, and concludes with an additional five-week summer session. MAT - Secondary students prepare to teach in one of six content areas:

Physics
History
English
Chemistry
Biology
Bible

Learn from master educators at Brandeis and in outstanding local high schools. Further your knowledge of the subject you will teach by studying with excellent Brandeis professors. Intern in either an urban or suburban public school, a charter school, or Jewish day school, with mentoring support during your internship.

Curriculum


You will take four Brandeis Arts and Science courses in your content area: one in the first summer, two during the fall semester, and one in the second summer.

In addition, you will examine and experiment with principles and practices of teaching specific subject matter and engage some of the big questions and ideas about purposes and problems of education. You will study how to teach your subject in seminars with experienced master teachers from our affiliated schools.

You will round out the year with a Teacher Research Project in which you examine a pedagogical question raised during your internship. MAT students present their research findings in the second summer.

When you graduate


Students who successfully complete the program are awarded a Master of Arts in Teaching degree. Those who meet the requirements set by the State of Massachusetts are recommended for Initial Licensure to teach either grades 5-8 or 8-12 in Biology, Chemistry, English, or History; or grades 8-12 in Physics. There is no state licensure for teaching Bible Studies. Massachusetts is part of the Interstate Certification Compact and has reciprocity agreements with 45 states. These states may have additional testing or other licensure requirements.
