What are the requirements?

To obtain the specialization in quantitative biology, students must complete all requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Ph.D. program in which they are enrolled. In addition, students must successfully complete three of the four QB core courses listed below.  The participating Ph.D. programs have structured their requirements so that QB students need take only one additional course compared to non-QB students in the same program.

In addition to courses, QB students participate outside of the classroom in activities aimed to increase their scientific knowledge and foster their ability to function effectively as members of a multi-disciplinary team.

QB core courses:

  1. QBIO 120b: Quantitative Biology Instrumentation Laboratory
  2. BCHM 102: Quantitative Approahes to Biochemical Systems
  3. PHYS 105a: Biological Physics
  4. One of the following computational methods courses

No more than one of the computational methods courses may be counted toward the three-course QB requirement.
