Spencer Program for Educational Research
Brandeis University has been awarded a second three-year grant from the Spencer
Foundation to deepen our program in Discipline-based Scholarship of Education
that will provide a focal point for the many faculty members and graduate students
who address education from various disciplinary perspectives.
The Spencer Program on Educational Research at Brandeis currently consists of four components:
- Doctoral-student fellowships and mini-grants for research;
- Small research grants to participating faculty members;
- An interdisciplinary seminar on education research; and
- Campus-wide events.
These activities represent an effort to enhance the preparation of talented doctoral students interested in education in Arts and Sciences departments as well as at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management, and the International Business School. The program will serve to increase the visibility of education as a serious focus of research at Brandeis. Directed by Dr. Joyce Antler, Professor of American Studies and the Samuel B. Lane Professor of Jewish History and Culture, and Dr. Sharon Feiman-Nemser, the Mandel Professor of Jewish Education, the program will create a core group of faculty and doctoral students who will explore the role of interdisciplinary training in narrowing the gaps between education and the arts and sciences, researchers and practitioners, knowledge generation and knowledge use. Brandeis program will contribute to the broad conversation about how to prepare education scholars and how to improve the quality of education research.
The Spencer Interdisciplinary Seminar, the heart of the proposed program, will help develop a more sophisticated understanding of education research by exploring the pluralistic worlds of the disciplines and their methodologies and by engaging in a productive conversation that considers historical, applied and theoretical approaches to educational processes, context, policy and practice.
