Background
This archive contains all of the audio compiled by Brandeis University’s students while traveling in the Mississippi, Delta in the spring of 2006. We hope that the audio in this archive can become a resource for community members to hear memories and stories of life in the Delta as well as reflect on the state of the Delta today. This audio is based on Brandeis University’s students’ interviews and therefore the questions posed reflect individual student’s inquiries and interests. These audio segments touch on a plethora of subjects and themes including, the Civil Rights movement, segregation, education, and contemporary concerns, to name a few. Due to a limited time frame, the majority of the trip was spent in Clarksdale and subsequently we generated more audio from Clarksdale than Greenwood and Mound Bayou. We hope that Brandeis can continue to develop its relationships with communities in the Delta and expand this collection of interviews.

Suggestions for editing audio
Following the trip, Brandeis students analyzed the audio to uncover common themes and ideas and then used the program Audacity to edit these audio segments.

We found that editing was an extremely beneficial and educational exercise that enabled us to more thoroughly explore the stories and memories compiled. We hope that community members as well as individuals outside of the Delta can engage in a similar process with these unedited audio segments to bolster their knowledge and understanding of the Mississippi Delta and its rich history.
