PLEASE NOTE: THE FOLLOWING POSITION IS OPEN ONLY TO STUDENTS ENROLLED AT BRANDEIS UNIVERSITY

Undergraduate Research Assistantship, Spring, 2004 semester:

Undergraduate student sought for research assistantship for the Feminist Sexual Ethics Project, which explores the connections between religious texts and issues of sexual ethics for women in the United States. The current focus of the project is slavery and its aftermath.

The student research assistant will help a research team of scholars collecting and analyzing relevant primary sources on female slaves and female slaveholders in colonial America and in the United States, as well as female slaves and female slaveholders in early Christianity and the Roman Empire. The team is also carrying out research on American religious history, the history of the Jim Crow period, and on contemporary religious, legal, and public policy questions relating to the long shadow that slavery has cast over sexuality. We are especially focusing on the intersections among gender, religion, sexuality, and slavery.

Students interested in history, women’s studies, law, religious studies, and public policy are encouraged to apply. Web design and proof reading experience is also helpful. The research assistant will participate in research team meetings, do library research, literature reviews, web searches, data analysis, photocopying, and other duties as needed.

The project director, Prof. Bernadette Brooten, and the sponsor, the Ford Foundation, both place a high priority on assembling a multi-racial, multi-ethnic, multi-religious research team.

Please note: this is a part-time, temporary Brandeis student position.
