Comment on the Election of Arnold Schwarzenegger of Governor of California

Written by Bernadette Brooten.

In the face of numerous credible allegations of serious disrespect for women, Arnold Schwarzenegger's election represents a setback in the battle to stop sexual harassment, molestation, and violence. Nevertheless, we are in the middle of a major ethical shift in this country. Twenty years ago, such allegations were not being reported on. Twelve years ago, during the Clarence Thomas/Anita Hill hearings, for the first time, the public began serious debate of these issues. Last year, the public began to hold Catholic priests and bishops responsible for the molestation of children. The millions of people in this country working to make all sex genuinely consensual and based on mutual respect are in for the long haul. The last word has not been spoken.
