  • 1955 - The Sudan achieves independence.


  • 1972 - A peace agreement is reached.

  • 1983 - The Khartoum government attempts to establish sharia over Sudan. Hostilities are renewed. The SPLA headed by John Garang allies itself with the Nuba Mountain peoples led by Yousif Kuwa.

  • 1987 - The Khartoum government carries out devestating attacks on civilian populations in Southern Sudan. Refugees, including tens of thousands of children, flee to neighboring countries.

  • 1988 - Having surrounded the Nuba Mountain area, the Khartoum government begins systematic killing of the civilian population there.

  • 1991 - A government sympathetic to the Khartoum government takes control in Ethiopia. Refugee camps are attacked and refugees flee back into Sudan to escape.


  • 2000 - The United States of America starts a program for accepting Southern Sudanese refugees.

  • 2001 - After the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the United States tightens immigration controls and halts the program.

  • 2003 - Forces supported by the government begin attacks on civilians in Darfur.

  • 2005 - A cease-fire agreement is reached.
