Panel Discussion in Honor of President Lawrence

April 22, 2015

Dear Members of the Brandeis Community,

Please join us this evening for a special panel discussion and reception, in celebration of Fred Lawrence’s presidency at Brandeis University.

Four and a half years ago, in conjunction with President Lawrence’s inauguration, we held a symposium on the global liberal arts university. As Brandeis and other higher education institutions in the United States continue to wrestle with whether or not it is possible to excel as both a liberal arts institution and research university it is timely to revisit this issue. The colloquium, “The Liberal Arts Research University in the 21st Century,” will take place this evening, April 22, from 5:00-6:30 p.m., in the Shapiro Campus Center Theater. A reception will follow.

Four current or retired senior members of the Brandeis faculty will participate on the panel: Professors Eric Chasalow, Dean, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and Irving Fine Professor of Music, Sarah Lamb, Professor of Anthropology and Division Chair, Social Sciences, Robin Feuer Miller, Edytha Macy Gross Professor of Humanities and Professor of Russian and Comparative Literature, and Greg Petsko, Professor of Neurology at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City and Tauber Professor of Biochemistry and Chemistry, Emeritus, at Brandeis. President Lawrence will join in the discussion, offering his own reflections and posing questions for the panel. There will also be an opportunity for questions and comments from the audience.

I hope you can join us on this special occasion. The discussion is certain to be stimulating as we honor Fred Lawrence by exploring ideas that have been at the heart of his presidency.

Sincerely,

Lisa Lynch Lisa M. Lynch, PhD
