University Academic Organization

The provost is the chief academic officer of the university with administrative authority under the president for setting and implementing academic policy. The provost provides strategic leadership for the academy to achieve the university's academic mission and to improve the quality of the institution's teaching, learning and scholarship. The provost is also responsible for academic governance and strategic planning for the university.

The Provost is the second-ranking member of the administration. The Provost works closely and collaboratively with the President, and presides over the affairs of the university in the absence of the President.

Provost's Cabinet

The Cabinet functions, in effect, as the brain trust of the University. This structure allows the provost to engage faculty, students and staff in a productive way because the lines of communication are open and ongoing. It enables the provost to discern areas of support that is needed and where there are opportunities, and it enhances the provost office's ability to support teaching, learning and scholarship.

Integrated Planning and Budget Committee (IPBC)

The IPBC is charged with planning in the short, medium and long-term for the University, creating budgets that reflect the University mission and goals, and making financial recommendations to the President and the Board. IPBC is chaired by Provost Steve Goldstein.

In the 2013-14 academic year the work of IPBC will be informed by the merging of strategic plan implementation goals and will continue to transition to mission-based budgets, working on operational effectiveness to improve services and save money (as we were able last year to shift resources into the academy).

University Advisory Council (UAC)

Faculty Handbook Section VI.D.2

a. The University Advisory Council is composed of six faculty members appointed by the Provost in consultation with the Council of the Faculty Senate. The Provost, the Academic Deans, the Chief Operating Officer, and the Senior Vice President for Students and Enrollment are members of the Council. The Provost serves as chair. Appointment terms for faculty members will be defined by the Provost. The Provost may invite others to participate in the work of the Council as appropriate.

b. The University Advisory Council advises the Provost and the Deans. The Council provides advice concerning the appointment or reappointment of academic officers, and the establishment or discontinuation of departments, programs, and other academic units. At the request of the academic administration, it provides advice on the formulation and implementation of academic policies; on the review and/or further development of the educational and research activities of the university; on the academic organization of the university; on the university budget; and on other matters of concern to the university community. The Council may, at the request of the academic administration, help formulate legislation for presentation to the Faculty Meeting.

c. In order to carry out its advisory function the University Advisory Council receives the reports produced by all standing and special faculty committees.

d. At the request of the Provost, the deliberations of the Council may be confidential.
