This publication represents one of the Department of Public Safety’s efforts to comply with the provisions of the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act of 1990 and the Jeanne Clery Act of 1998. The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, (The Clery Act) requires Brandeis University to provide students and employees with information on its security policies and procedures and specific statistics for certain criminal incidents, arrests and disciplinary referrals and to make the information available to prospective students and employees upon request.
The Higher Education Act of 2008 and its accompanying regulations requires that each eligible institution participating in any program under this title that maintains any on campus student housing facility must, on an annual basis, publish a fire safety report, which shall contain information with respect to the campus fire safety practices and standards of that institution.
Contained within the Brandeis Public Safety publication are descriptions of each on - campus student housing facility fire safety system, the number of fire drills held during the previous calendar year, the institution's policies on portable electrical appliances, smoking and open flames within student housing facilities. In addition the publication describes the institution's procedures for student housing evacuation in case of fire as well as the policies regarding fire safety education and training programs provided to students and employees.
Statistics relating to number of fires,(for 3 most recent calendar years) their cause, as well as the number of persons who received injuries that resulted in treatment at a medical facility are readily accessible within this publication. Value of property damage occurring as a result of a campus housing facility fire is also described.
The Department of Public Safety maintains a written fire log which outlines any fire that has occurred within an on campus student housing facility. The log contains the date, time and location of each fire.
Campus Safety and Security at Brandeis University is a shared responsibility. Clearly the best protection against campus crime is an aware, informed and alert campus community. The vast majority of our students, faculty, staff and visitors do not experience crime at Brandeis University. However, despite our best efforts, crimes sometimes occur. This information is provided because of our commitment to campus safety and security and in compliance with federal law.

In September 2007, the Firearms Safety Advisory Committee, chaired by Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Peter French, and composed of university faculty, students and staff members, submitted its final report to President Reinharz, recommending unanimously that "an appropriate process be commenced as soon as possible to arm our public safety officers."
