Topics in Greek and Roman History
[ hum wi ] Topic for fall 2009: The Invention of History. Recalling the past may be universal, but the origins and practice of history are heavily influenced by Western cultural ideas and constraints about causation, time, human character, the nature of power, and an array of other assumptions. Readings from Herodotus, Thucydides, and Livy will be analyzed within the context of Hebrew, Chinese, and other cultural settings to determine what history is as well as what it might be. |
