Topic for fall 2010: Nineteenth Century Art from Turner to Monet The seminar will be a series of case studies on the great painting of the 19th Century. Study of the British Romantic tradition as origin of innovations in French painting. Artists to be considered in depth: Beginning with British Romanticism, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable; David, Gericault, Delacroix; the Pre-Raphaelites; origins of modernism- Manet, Degas; Monet and the Impressionist group. The links between Britain and France will extend to American art in the Hudson River school (Cole, Durand, F. E. Church).
Course requirements: Some background in art history or a strong interest in English literature, other fields of interest welcome; weekly meetings will include presentations by both professor and students. Field trips will be planned to area museums. Final product for the seminar is an oral report and 15-20 page research paper.
