Topic for fall 2010: Conflict and Consensus in Israeli Society. Focuses on key issues in shaping the Israeli experience, including Zionist colonization; immigrant absorption; the uses of collective memory of the ancient past and of the Holocaust; political proposals for resolving the conflict; the 1948 war and responsibility for the refugee problems; and whether or how Israel can be both democratic and Jewish. Parallel narratives and comparative perspectives will be extensively used. Course will be conducted as a seminar.
Not recommended for first year students.
