Studies in Renaissance and Baroque Art
[ ca wi ] See Course Catalog for Special Notes Open to: Majors and Minors in Fine Arts, Italian Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, or permission of the instructor. Topic for spring 2012: Raphael and his Legacy. No painter in the History of Art can rival the esteem and influence of Raphael (1483-1520). From his own lifetime until well into the 19th-century he defined the canon, though modern tastes tend to prefer the sublime, tortured grandeur of Michelangelo, or the enigmatic vitality of Leonardo. Raphael forged his style from theirs, to create a synthesis of unparalleled grace and power – a Classicism rivaling the ancients that formed a template for three centuries of artistic practice. This course examines the whole range of Raphael’s output – frescoes, altarpieces, devotional icons, portraits, drawings, engravings, tapestries, architectural designs – and considers how their embodiment of figural elegance, harmonious design, and narrative clarity provided such enduring paradigms for the history of art. We also probe Raphael’s own world, especially how his art served the cultural politics of the Papacies of Julius II and Leo X during a period of social and religious upheaval. Student research projects will either focus on certain aspects and themes of Raphael’s oeuvre, or evaluate his legacy in later epochs of art history. |
