Topic for fall 2013: Historical Linguistics and Language Change
Prerequisites: Ling 100a, Introduction to Linguistics
Introduces students to the study of historical linguistics and language change. Teaches the methods and goals of linguistic reconstruction, types of linguistic change, mechanisms of change, and recent theories about how and why change occurs. The course will have a hands-on approach, teaching students to apply principles learned to data from ancient and modern languages in a variety of language families.
