Topic for spring 2013: Contemporary Art and Global Culture 1990-2012. In the contemporary world every region is touched by the logic of global capital and every society contributes to global culture. The War on Terror and the ecological, epidemiological, and financial crises of the first decade of the new century have demonstrated the interconnections that define nearly every aspect of our lives. Even the boundaries of the self and the body are no longer secure. This seminar will look at the work of artists who examine global logic with an eye toward gaining perspective on our lives and imagininge social change. These artists also prompt us to see commonalities beyond those forced upon us by the economy. Artists to be considered address the realms of technology, geography, psychology, economy, media culture, nature and politics and might include Yael Bartana, Andrea Bowers, Silvia Kolbowski, Willie Doherty, Cao Fei, Roni Horn, Zoe Leonard, Takashi Murakami, Chen Chieh-jen, and Alan Sekula.
