Pro-Seminar: Growing and Sustaining a Social Justice NGO: Lessons from Practice This pro-seminar aims at providing students with a framework for decision-making on whether and why to launch a social justice NGO in a specific environment, and to provide a guideline for planning and implementing the launching and growth of such an NGO. It builds on but does not duplicate materials in other SID courses, particularly Planning and Implementation, and Fundraising. The Pro-Seminar will offer a framework to help students think systematically about the priority leadership and management tasks for developing sustainable NGOs including the mission and values, the contextual opportunities and constraints, the functions and motivation of staff as well as the functions of a productive Board.

Pro-Seminar: Sustainable Development through community/local participation and partnerships: Theory and Practice in Ghana While deepening students understanding of sustainability beyond poverty and poverty reduction, to include human and social capital development, this pro-seminar also seeks to build bridges between the theory and practice of sustainable (rural) development by offering students from the north the opportunity to analyze and discuss cases studies in the south aimed at ensuring voice, decision-making and social inclusion, perceived to be crucial to sustainable development. Pro-Seminar: A Way Out of No Way: Cultural Work for Social Transformation In this pro-seminar, through case studies and hands-on experiences, participants will explore the meaning of cultural work, and how the arts and cultural practices can catalyze social change. We will examine the work of an artist in a community, and what happens when artists engage communities with the intention of empowerment and greater social justice. Examples will be drawn from the practice of Jane Sapp, the pro-seminar leader, focusing on her work in communities of color in Alabama and South Carolina, as well as in Massachusetts. Pro-Seminar: Statistics for Development Practitioners The pro-seminar goes into depth about basic principles of statistics. Development work in the field involves making decisions every day, weighing alternatives, and being able to apply evidence to decision-making. Statistics play an important role in this process. Emphasis is put on how to understand and interpret statistics, what statistical data is telling us as development managers, and how statistical information can be used to help development practitioners improve our work and the effectiveness of development interventions. Tools will be learned and practiced; the seminar provides lectures and cases in the mornings, with experiential, interactive labs in the afternoons.
