Counts as LALS 100a in spring 2014.
Borderlands: Mexico and the U.S., 1848 to the present. There are 1,954 miles of border that unite and separate the United States and Mexico. It is the busiest international land boundary on earth, as well as the longest border between the developed and the developing worlds. Because of its complicated history and reality the border has come to be known as a place of violence and death. Yet it is also an environment that fosters the union of people, practices, and ideas. The same political and economic forces that have brought terrible violence to the region have also stimulated cultural developments of great social significance. The border is, in short, a place of contrasts; a geographic space where humans have faced incredible challenges for generations while creating complex and vibrant cultures. This class will analyze the parallel cultural, political and economic developments in the histories of northern Mexico and the southern United States from the 19th century through today.
