How have the departments within Student Affairs helped you achieve your academic goals?

While at Brandeis, the Department of Athletics, Physical Education, and Recreation has been very helpful to me. In my first year, I was able to release stress by going to Gosman and working out. The availability to swim, run, and play basketball was very convenient. I utilized the Department of Community Living by calling and speaking with them about my concerns. The Hiatt Career Center has been an extremely helpful resource. They have provided me with resume and internship help, as well as, information for scholarships. I was also assisted when trying to receive funding when I was awarded $5,000 from the WOW scholarship that the Hiatt Career Center provides. For this reason, Hiatt will continue to be one of my main resources. However, since I know that there are other departments within Student Affairs other than Hiatt, I want to branch out and seek help from them too.

What are you hoping to achieve in the next academic year and how do you foresee yourself utilizing the services offered by Student Affairs?

I hope to get close to all A's for the next school year. Along with taking advantage of my professors' office hours, I will be using the various tutoring services that Brandeis makes available to students. I also plan on using the athletics center more this year to get healthier and improve my overall approach to health and wellness.

Are you doing something of substance over the summer and does it tie into Brandeis’ mission and values?

My plan for the summer is to make connections on and off campus, talk with academic advisors, and network with professors in my field of study. I am currently involved in an independent study on campus with one of my professors, Eric Olson. We are conducting research on the tick population in Waltham, Weston, and Newton. Professor Olson and I are also working on wildflower conservation. These projects allow me to receive first-hand experience in my field of study.

Do you have a Brandeis bucket list?

During my time at Brandeis, I would like to study abroad in South Africa or East Asia, join one of the black student unions on campus, and to take advantage of the grant and program that I am in, which is the Myra Kraft Transitional Year Program (MKTYP). I also am adamant about being apart of a research lab on campus.

What is something interesting that you like to participate in at Brandeis and in your leisure time?

When I am not studying, I like to workout with friends. I also plan to join the rugby team.

How have you enjoyed your experience at Brandeis thus far?

I have been able to make connections with my peers and I feel that college has helped me grow. I learned more about life and I have met different types of people since coming to Brandeis. Though it was a culture shock, I have been able to adapt to my environment. Being at Brandeis has also taught me how to deal with issues that I previously didn’t have exposure to. I am looking forward to the next few years!
