Meet the Staff
Lucas Malo has been passionately involved in service for almost 20 years and is eager to support, advise and facilitate opportunities locally and globally as an active member of the Brandeis community. He began his Brandeis career in 2005 in the Department of Residence Life and moved to Community Service in spring 2008. Malo holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Saint Michael's College and a master's degree in Social Work from the University of Maine. Beyond Brandeis, he enjoys playing tennis, shopping, traveling and playing board games. Malo invites students to visit his office on the second floor of the Shapiro Campus Center.
Kelly Whiffen joined Brandeis in 2010 as the Department Coordinator of Student Activities and Community Service. Before coming to Brandeis, she worked in several coordinating roles, including Weekly Ad Coordinator and Schedule Coordinator at CVS Caremark and Communications Coordinator at Camp West Woods. She also worked with students as a gymnastics coach. Kelly holds a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Ithaca College, where she was actively involved in campus life as a gymnast for the school's Varsity team, copy editor for the school's newspaper and co-director of a Christian retreat. Outside of Brandeis, Kelly enjoys running, reading and volunteering with her church.
Brian joined the Brandeis community for the start of the 2014-2015 school year. Prior to coming to Brandeis, Brian served as the Graduate Assistant for Student Activities and Leadership at Babson College where he oversaw several leadership development programs. He also held an internship with the Orientation Office at James Madison University. Brian holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from Holy Cross and a master's degree in higher education administration from Boston College. In his spare time, Brian enjoys cheering for the Red Sox, hiking, and playing golf.
Educational Program Consultant
Sarah McLaughlin is the Principal of the Frost Elementary school in Lawrence MA. Last year, Sarah was a Principal at the Dever-McCormack School in Boston. Previously, Sarah was the Director of the Office of School Redesign at the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. She is a former Teach For America corps member who taught elementary school in Washington DC and later served as a Program Director at a middle school in New York City. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Boston University and a Masters degree in Public Administration from Columbia University.
Talia comes to Brandeis after spending four idyllic years at Smith college, where she spent her time determining which coffee shop had the best latte. She was also fortunate to have the experiences of volunteering at Homework House, Tree House and the Kensington School refugee mentoring program. When not in school, she worked as a substitute teacher and a retail associate. Outside of Brandeis, she enjoys spending copious hours on Netflix, and attempting to cook edible meals.
Commitment to Service Program Coordinator
Cameron is originally from Phoenix, Arizona and is a current MA candidate in the Sustainable International Development program here in the Heller School. In 2011 he obtained his BS in Sociology from Portland State University in Oregon. After graduating from Portland State University, Cameron served as a Community Involvement Specialist as an AmeriCorps member with Metropolitan Family Services. Most recently Cameron had numerous roles at Big Brother Big Sister of Central Arizona. In his spare time, Cameron enjoys snowboarding, skateboarding, hiking, and cheering on all of Arizona's sports teams.
Waltham Group Budget and Steering- Assessment Coordinator
Petra is a senior from Chicago, Illinois, majoring in Spanish, Anthropology, and Latin American and Latino Studies. She is a coordinator for Hunger and Homelessness, a program that relieves food insecurity and allows students the opportunity to share experiences with the food and housing insecure. She volunteers for Waltham Group’s General Tutoring, is the Development Intern for the Waltham Family School, and loves watching good movies, teaching Pilates, and cutting her friends’ hair. She is thrilled to have a larger role in Waltham Group this year and to work more closely with all its amazing programs.
