"The relationship between the City of Waltham and Brandeis University is a fascinating study in contradictions. Founded in dedication to the ideals of social justice and infused with the progressive spirit  of Eleanor Roosevelt, the university has nonetheless appeared, all too often, as an isolated city on the hill, far apart from its neighbors in the city. Although Brandeis students have for decades volunteered in the least privileged sectors of the city, the academic sectors of the institution have tended not to acknowledge the proximity of this historically working-class town.  Through the emerging collaboration between the co-curricular Department of Community Service and the academic Community Engaged Learning program, we have the exciting opportunity to alter our institutional culture, placing our partnerships with Waltham's communities at the heart of our identity as a university."
