For Students Studying Abroad
The Division of Students and Enrollment has implemented several new policies regarding study abroad. These changes have been implemented due to a number of factors: response to student requests and a desire by our campus community to continue to house the incoming mid-year class together; the need for better academic preparedness for students studying abroad; and new economic realities.
In order to better manage campus housing, we will be requiring students who go abroad for the spring 2010 semester to participate in a stand-alone room selection process if they wish to live on-campus in the fall. This special room selection process will be for guaranteed on-campus housing for the fall of 2009 only. All students who formally indicate their desire to study abroad in spring 2010, meet the established study abroad eligibility criteria and wish to live on-campus will be housed in the Village. (If fall-only housing exceeds the capacity of the Village, additional areas will be offered.) Students will have the opportunity to participate in study abroad events and pre-departure orientations in their residence hall during the fall.
Students who wish to take advantage of this guaranteed, fall-only housing option must do two things:
- Check the box in sage to indicate they want to participate in the room selection process for next year by the January 31, 2009 deadline.
- Submit the online Preliminary Study Abroad Application by the February 15, 2009 deadline.
Please note that any students who receive guaranteed fall housing and who later withdraw their spring 2010 study abroad application or who are not approved to study abroad will have to vacate the fall-only housing they selected at the conclusion of the fall semester. We can not guarantee spring housing for students who remain on campus.
Students studying abroad in the fall semester, as in years past, are not guaranteed housing when they return. Our first priority is to house the incoming midyear students as a group. In the past the number of students going abroad for spring semester has been greater than the size of the incoming midyear class. While we don't guarantee housing for students returning from abroad (and we never have), we do anticipate that there will be space available for students returning abroad in the Village and space in other Junior/Senior areas from students graduating in December. It is not possible, at this point, to predict how many spaces we will have available, as we don't have a sense of the number of students going abroad for Spring 2010 or the size of the midyear class, but we do feel that we will have a number of spaces available.
More information regarding the new housing policies related to study abroad can be found in the Room Selection section of our website on the Frequently Asked Questions page. You can also email us at dcl@brandeis.edu if you have any questions regarding study abroad and housing.
