H1N1 Flu Update: January 29, 2010

Welcome back.  I trust you all had a wonderful semester break.

While you were away, we received our promised shipment of H1N1 vaccine.  As you know, the Health Center has organized two clinics since the start of the semester to provide shots of both H1N1 vaccine, as well as seasonal flu vaccine.  There are still shots available.  However, no additional clinics are scheduled so students who are seeking a vaccine shot should go the Health Center during regular immunization sessions - Monday - Friday 9AM-11:30AM and 1PM-3:30PM.

The flu, though in retreat, has not totally left us.  This past week we have had three undergraduates diagnosed with ILI and placed under care.  The vaccine takes several days to fully kick in, so we are expecting that the number of cases will all but disappear soon.  We are told that flu often re-emerges, so we will all have to be watchful for signs of return.

Though the flu has dissipated, the Health Center reports that we have had several cases of a GI based illness this past week that is quite nasty.  The staff at the Center recommends continuation of healthy practices that were stressed for the flu - washing hands often, refraining from sharing cups, food, ping pong balls, etc.

I am also pleased to report that the Health Center has appointed a new Co - Director.  Her name is Toby Walters. Please welcome Toby when you get a chance.  She is very excited to get started on February 8, and looks forward to becoming a member of this special community.
