The Chaplains
Reverend Walter Cuenin, Coordinator of the Interfaith Chaplaincy
Rev.Walter Cuenin is the Catholic chaplain for the University. Reverend Cuenin received his B.A. degree from Saint John’s Seminary in Boston in 1967. He then studied at the Gregorian University in Rome where he obtained his Bachelor’s degree in sacred theology in 1969. He was ordained a priest at St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City in 1970. He then obtained his license in sacred theology in 1970 also from the Gregorian University. He received his doctorate in sacred theology from the Gregorian University in 1977. Father Cuenin has served in many parishes of the Archdiocese of Boston and taught theology at the Weston Jesuit School of Theology in Cambridge, MA. He has a sister and two brothers who are married and live in the South.
Imam Talal Eid
Dr. Imam Talal Eid is the Muslim chaplain for the University. He is the Executive Director of the Islamic Institute of Boston and Muslim chaplain at Massachusetts General Hospital. Originally from Lebanon, he received his Bachelor’s degree from Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt. He also received a Master of Theological Studies and Doctor of Theology from Harvard Divinity School. He is married and has seven children.
Alexander Levering Kern
Alex Kern is the Protestant chaplain for the University. He is a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). He received his Masters of Divinity at Andover Newton Theological School, where he also served as adjunct faculty and staff. His B.A. in Religious Studies, History and African American Studies is from Guilford College in North Carolina. He also received a Certificate from the Boston Theological Institute for work focused on reconciliation, ecumenism and restorative justice. In addition to his work at Brandeis, Alex serves as Executive Director of Cooperative Metropolitan Ministries. Originally fromWashington, D.C., he lives now in Somerville with his wife and two young children.
Rabbi Elyse Winick
Rabbi Elyse Winick is the Jewish Chaplain for the University. Serving as Jewish Chaplain is a homecoming for Rabbi Winick, NEJS '86. Following her ordination by The Jewish Theological Seminary, Rabbi Winick joined the Brandeis Hillel staff as Assistant Director from 1992-1996. In addition to her campus responsibilities, Rabbi Winick serves as the Associate Director of KOACH, the college outreach department of The United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. Married to David Small (Sociology, '86), she and her family live in Newton.
