Welcome to Usen Castle
Usen Castle and Schwartz Hall offer 120 sophomore students an eclectic style living option on campus with many breathtaking views of the Boston Skyline. The Castle is home to Cholmondeley's, or Chum's, Brandeis's coffeehouse and late night snack bar. The Castle is conveniently located next to the Usdan Student Center which houses Financial Services, Community Living, the campus mailroom, two a la carte dining halls, Hiatt Career Center, Academic Services, Hillel, Chaplains Office and a convenience store. Within close proximity one will also find the Gosman Sports Center, the Rabb Academic Quad, the Science Complex and the Health and Counseling Centers.
Usen Castle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the oldest building on Brandeis's campus.
Usen Castle has 3 Community Advisors (CAs) who engage resident in establishing active living and learning environments where each individual is invested in promoting the success and safety of all members of the community. The CAs create and execute programs, address student concerns, and support the community when issues arise.
Usen Castle shares an Area Coordinator (AC), a live-in full time professional staff member with an advanced degree, and an Assistant Area Coordinator (AAC), a live-in part time graduate-level staff member earning an advanced degree, with North. The AC and AAC supervise the CAs, manage the residence halls, and hold regular office hours in the community office.
Usen Castle is comprised of single, double, and triple rooms, as well as suite options in a variety of configurations. No two rooms in Usen Castle are identical, so the shapes and sizes of the rooms vary. Many of the rooms have sinks, and a few select rooms have hardwood floors. All singles, doubles, and triples are located on single gender floors, and the suites are gender neutral. Students living in suites are responsible for cleaning their shared living areas, as well as for providing their own paper products.
