Partners for Civic Engagement Living Learning Community

The Partners for Civic Engagement (PCE) program brings together first year students who share an interest in community service, encouraging conversations among students, staff, faculty, and community members about citizenship and social responsibility in a residential setting.  Participants will engage in purposeful volunteer service and thoughtful reflection, encouraging them to think deeply about social issues and their role as leaders for the common good.

Goals of this program include:

  • Developing an intentional residential community dedicated to principles of citizenship, integrity, mutual respect, lifelong learning, and democratic participation
  • Building meaningful, sustained connections with the Waltham and greater Boston communities through participant volunteerism in response to expressed community needs and social issues
  • Aiding in the successful transition to college, which includes participants developing knowledge of campus resources and competency in accessing those resources
  • Enhancing the University’s commitments to social justice and experiential learning, and provide students with skills and perspectives to be effective leaders in a changing world

PCE members will explore individual and collective definitions of the concept of civic engagement through volunteer service (a minimum of 50 hours), enrollment in shared courses (course list coming soon), meetings with faculty, staff and community members, and engagement in leadership development workshops.  PCE members will work regularly with people and organizations committed to improving the community through active involvement, including the Waltham Group, Community-Engaged Learning Initiatives, and the Department of Residence Life.
