Courses

Outdoor Class

Course offerings will include beginning, two levels of intermediate, and two levels of advanced Hebrew. All courses share an emphasis on aspects of Israeli culture. Classes will meet from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9:00 a.m. to 12 Noon on Fridays. Daily sessions include group instruction, individual study, tutoring, conversational practice, lab sessions, and a Hebrew lunch table. Special activities and social events will be scheduled throughout the program, evenings and Sundays. Students will participate in one of the following courses on either an academic credit or audit basis.

HBRW 10a
Beginning Hebrew
1 course credit (4 sem. hrs.)

For students with no previous knowledge and those with a minimal background, this course will provide intensive training in the basics of Hebrew grammar, listening comprehension, speaking, reading, and writing.

HBRW 20b
Intermediate Hebrew
1 course credit (4 sem. hrs.)
Prerequisite: HBRW 10a or the equivalent as determined by placement exam.

This course is a continuation of Hebrew 10a, employing the same methods.

HBRW 34a
Intermediate Hebrew II: Aspects of Israeli Culture

1 course credit (4 sem. hrs.)
Prerequisite: Any 20-level Hebrew course or the equivalent as determined by placement exam.

This course is a continuation of Hebrew 20b, developing higher-level skills in reading, writing, and conversation. Contemporary cultural aspects will be stressed and a variety of authentic materials and media will be used.

HBRW 44b
Advanced Hebrew: Aspects of Israeli Culture
1 course credit (4 sem. hrs.)

Prerequisite: Any 30-level Hebrew course or the equivalent.

This course is intended to reinforce the acquired skills of speaking, listening comprehension, reading, and writing. Contemporary cultural aspects are stressed; conversational Hebrew and reading selections are drawn from modern literature, political essays, and newspaper articles.

HBRW 161b
Israel Today: Advanced Conversation and Writing
1 course credit (4 sem. hrs.)
Prerequisite: HBRW 141a, 143a or b, 144a, or 146a.

This course is designed for advanced students who wish to enhance their proficiency and accuracy in writing and speaking. Plays, essays, current articles from Israeli newspapers, and films will provide the basis for written assignments and discussions.
