A Day in the Life A typical day in the Hebrew Language Summer Institute (HLSI) begins at 9:00 a.m. with lecture classes. There is a brief break at 11:00 a.m. and light refreshments will be provided. Mail is frequently delivered and announcements are often made at this time. After the break, students have a chance to practice their skills in the language lab or practice Hebrew in spoken or written form. This component varies from day to day. Classes then recess at 12:30 for lunch - usually to gather together in the dining hall at the Hebrew lunch table. This is another opportunity for participants to receive mail and messages or to visit the Summer School Office.
Following lunch at 1:40 p.m., students will gather for lectures focusing on cultural enrichment, with an emphasis placed on Israeli culture or Jewish life in America. Special activities and guest lecturers are also scheduled during this period of the day. At 2:30 p.m., students will have a chance to begin work on their homework assignments under faculty supervision so that clarification and reinforcement are immediately available. Individual tutoring is also available at this time. The HLSI Activities Center, located in The Village Residence Hall where on campus accommodations are situated, is provided for participants to use in viewing films, reading Israeli periodicals, to receive peer and professional assistance with homework assignments, to rehearse for theatrical and musical performances, and to join in playing Hebrew editions of familiar games.
