What are the accommodations for Hebrew Language Summer Institute participants?
Summer School students participating in the HLSI live on one floor of "The Village" Residence Hall, Tower A (L30 on the Brandeis Campus Map) - one of the newest housing complexes at Brandeis.

This air-conditioned building houses students in private single rooms with several shared single-sex restrooms/showers on each floor. Student rooms are furnished with bed, desk, and bureau. Personal essentials like bed linens (twin extra long), blankets, pillows, towels, waste baskets, alarm clocks, desk lamps, etc. are not provided. A shower caddy, shower shoes and bathrobe are also recommended.

On each floor of the Village there is a large common area lounge and a communal kitchenette. In addition to this large common area there are also smaller lounges for studying and student use on each floor. These shared lounge areas are furnished with a random assortment of tables, sofas and chairs.

Coin operated laundry facilities can be found on the first floor. The building is elevator-equipped.

If you wish to ship items in advance of your arrival, we will do our best to have them in your rooms by the close of business on Friday, May 29. Details on shipping items and receiving mail while at the Institute will be provided in your HLSI Welcome Email once you have registered for the HLSI and submitted a housing application.

Dates of Occupancy
Friday, May 29, at noon to Friday, June 26, at 5:00 pm

How do I apply for housing?
Complete and return the appropriate housing application form. If you have indicated that you were expecting to be housed on-campus, but have not submitted the housing and dining applications, forms may be found here. Please note: if you elect to live in University housing for the program, you are required to sign up for a meal plan.

What are the housing costs?
The charge for summer accommodations is $700 for the four-weeks of the program. Participation in a meal plan is mandatory and will result in the additional charges identified below.

What are the options for summer dining?
The dining facility in use for the summer is Sherman Hall. Recently renovated, Sherman is unique in that it houses both the kosher and non-kosher kitchens and service areas. To make kosher service possible, special rules are posted and the Sherman staff is trained to intervene and offer correction should diners deviate from those rules. You're asked to commit to one type of meal plan and stick with it throughout the program. All diners are expected to cooperate and observe the simple rules that make it possible for everyone to dine together.

Students may elect a plan that permits them to choose any 14 meals per week or a 21 meals per week plan that provides three meals a day, seven days a week. A housing application is considered complete only when a signed meal contract has been submitted.

Meal Plans
14-Meal Plan $ 700
21-Meal Plan $ 965

How do I arrange for telephone and computer services in my room?
The proliferation of cell phone use has made requesting a phone in your dorm room fully optional. The University has a new IP (Internet Protocol) phone system which requires the use of special IP telephones that are generally unavailable to the consumer. If you would like a telephone in your room, there is a $50 rental fee. Standard service includes free on-campus, local calling, toll-free access and voice mail. Long distance service will require the use of a prepaid or toll-free calling card.

Every dormitory room is equipped at no charge with access the World Wide Web. You are responsible for providing your own computer and Ethernet cable so that you may connect to the Brandeis Network. The Information Technology Services website provides the best information on how to be sure your computer is compatible with the University's network. Visit them at the LTS Website.
