Brandeis Grading System and Options

For Undergraduates
The following grades will be used with plus or minus, where appropriate:

  A    High distinction
B  Distinction
C  Satisfactory
D  Passing but unsatisfactory
E  Failure

For Graduates
The established grades are A, B, C, D, and E. Grades of A, B, or Credit indicate that the course was passed with distinction. Only courses passed with distinction may be counted toward a high degree. Nothing below a B- is accepted for graduate credit.

Incomplete
With the consent of the director of the Summer School, a student may receive an authorized incomplete. A student receiving a grade of Incomplete will be granted a specific extension of time, in no case later than September 10. Instructors are required to submit letter grades to replace Incompletes no later than September 17 to avoid conversion to a grade of E by the Committee on Academic Standing.

Examination Schedule

Students are not permitted to take the final examination in courses in which they are enrolled on a noncredit basis. Students who have not completed payment of tuition and fees may be prevented from sitting for final examinations. Final examinations must be taken at the time scheduled by the Summer School Office. No grade will be accepted by the Summer School for unauthorized examinations.

Instructors are expected to work within this schedule. Occasionally, an instructor will poll a class to determine the feasibility of changing exam times. If a proposed change poses a conflict or difficulty for a student, the Summer School Office will serve as an advocate for students in resolving the time conflict while preserving confidentiality.

Make-up Examinations
Absence from the final examination and the right to take a makeup examination are only permissible for documented medical reasons. If a student is unable to take the final examination because of illness, the student must notify the Summer School Office of the illness as early as possible before the exam and provide appropriate documentation in order to be eligible for a make-up examination.

Receiving Final Grades
The University uses electronic notification of grades in SAGE: hard copies of grade reports are no longer mailed to students. Students should not confuse personal grade reports with official transcripts.

Once Instructors have recorded the course grades, all students may view them online in the SAGE system using their ID number and password.

Beginning in Summer '06, Brandeis degree candidates who enroll in Summer School courses will automatically have a new, non-degree career created for them in SAGE. When you log into SAGE after enrolling, you will see the new academic career under your existing Student ID. The new career will hold your summer courses separate from other degree work for two important reasons: you will get to decide whether you want the courses rolled over to your undergraduate degree; and, under the University's new residency requirement, this device will provide the University Registrar method for auditing how many summer courses you have applied to your undergraduate degree. At the end of the summer, you will be contacted by the University Registrar and asked to confirm which of your summer courses should be carried over to your undergraduate record.

Requesting Official Transcripts
Students who wish to have an official transcript sent to another institution should indicate so in writing to the Office of the Registrar. Transcripts showing noncredit courses will be sent by the Office of the Registrar upon the student's written request. No transcript will be released for a student until all financial obligations have been met. The first twenty transcripts will be sent free of charge. Additional copies may be obtained at a charge of $5 per copy. Forms for requesting an official transcript are available at:
