Open Enrollment

Admission to the Summer School rests on the assumption that each student knows best what he or she wants and can do. Enrollment is open to a wide cross-section of qualified persons, including students currently enrolled in colleges and universities as well as individuals not currently engaged in any formal educational program, but who hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. High school students who have completed their Junior year and anticipate receiving a diploma in Spring 2009 are also eligible to register in the Summer School.

High School Students

High School students who have completed their junior year may apply for admission to the Summer School. Because the Summer Program cannot offer supervision to minors, this option is open only to students who reside locally or have made their own housing arrangements. A transcript and letter of recommendation from a teacher or guidance counselor are required.

International Students

International students who wish to enroll in the Brandeis Summer School Program should be aware of three important factors.

  1. Due to recent events there have been many changes in the way Student and Tourist Visas are issued here in the United States. Sadly, Brandeis is not equipped to issue I-20 forms for F-1 student visas as the Brandeis Summer School is not considered a full-time Summer Program. Students who already have a F-1 visa, and are attending another U.S. college, are welcome to submit an application. Otherwise, sadly, we can not assist you in obtaining a Visa for our summer courses.
  2. Enrollment in college-level courses at Brandeis presumes English language proficiency at a level at least equivalent to a score of 600 on TOEFL examination.
  3. Careful attention should be given to the immunization history form which will be required of all international students. Not only the records of immunization, but the method of immunization will be examined. Students who have not been immunized via the methods identified on the Immunization Record Form will be required to be re-immunized at their own expense.

Visiting Students from Colleges/Universities other than Brandeis:

It is wise for visiting students to check with their home institution regarding the transferability of Brandeis course credits, particularly with regard to pass/fail status. One Brandeis semester course credit is equivalent to four units or four credit hours at other universities. Since degree regulations vary among schools, students opting for pass/fail status should obtain approval from their home institution prior to the summer session. Notification to a visiting student's home institution is made via an official transcript. Federal laws require that all transcripts be requested from the Office of the University Registrar in writing. Forms for obtaining official transcripts are available through the Registrar's office: http://www.brandeis.edu/registrar/forms/requests.html

Online Course Registration

Online enrollment through SAGE is open to:

  • Current Brandeis Undergraduate and Graduate s in good financial standing
  • Brandeis Alumni and Former Brandeis students
  • Returning visitors and employees
  • Adult learners
  • Undergraduate and Graduate students from other college and universities

For Instructions on how to register in SAGE visit this page.

For all others, online enrollment in SAGE is not available. Your enrollment will require paper forms which may be found on the links below. This includes:

How is enrollment in Summer School courses via SAGE different from the academic year?

Online enrollment through SAGE presumes immediate payment. If you enroll in courses via SAGE, but do not complete the payment portion of the enrollment process within 72 hours, we will prepare to drop your enrollments.

Beginning in Summer '06, Brandeis degree candidates who enroll in Summer School courses will automatically have a new, non-degree career created for them in SAGE. When you log into SAGE after enrolling, you will see the new academic career under your existing Student ID. The new career will hold your summer courses separate from other degree work for two important reasons: you will get to decide whether you want the courses rolled over to your undergraduate degree; and, under the University's new residency requirement, this device will provide the University Registrar method for auditing how many summer courses you have applied to your undergraduate degree. At the end of the summer, you will be contacted by the University Registrar and asked to confirm which of your summer courses should be carried over to your undergraduate record.

How do I pay for my summer charges?

There are four main ways to pay :

  • CREDIT CARD THROUGH TMS - A request for payment by credit card is built into the SAGE enrollment process. You can pay by MasterCard, Discover or American Express by selecting the "Make Payment through TMS Gateway" link. PLEASE NOTE: There is a 2%-4% service charge on payments made credit card. The charge will appear as "TMS Gateway" on your credit card statement.

  • U.S. BANK ACCOUNT TRANSFER THROUGH TMS - You may also use the TMS system to perform an Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and have money transferred from your U.S. checking or savings account to pay for your summer classes. The fee for this method is substantially less - just $0.25! per transaction... less than the cost of a stamp to mailing a check

You may also return to SAGE and view and pay your account balance with TMS by visiting:
Home > SA Self Service > Student Services > Finances > Financial Services.

If you have technical problems with the Tuition Management Systems (TMS) site, you can call TMS at 1-800-722-4867. The TMS monthly payment plan is not available for summer.

  • CHECK OR MONEY ORDER SENT TO BRANDEIS - You may also drop off a check or money order to either the Office of Student Financial Services in Usdan, Room 120 or the Summer School Office at Old South Street, 2nd floor.

Be sure to include the name of the student in the memo field of the check. Checks should be made payable to: "Brandeis University".

If mailing a check, please e-mail the Summer School office at
summerschool@brandeis.edu with your name and SAGE ID number so we may preserve your enrollment. The check should be mailed to: Summer School - MS 085, Brandeis University, PO Box 549110, Waltham, MA 02454-9110

  • STUDENT LOANS - If you are a current Brandeis undergraduate and qualify for loans as confirmed by your financial aid advisor in Student Financial Services, a notation is added to your financial record to prevent you from being dropped from your courses before loan funds are received.

Can I send wire transfer or international wire transfer to pay my summer charges?

Yes. The Student's Name and I.D. (Social Security #) MUST be included in all wires and correspondence to ensure proper and timely credit.

Wire transfers should be sent to:
Bank of America
1 Federal Street, Boston, MA 02211
Brandeis Account Number: 0200977069
ABA Routing #: 026 009 593

For International Wire Transfers:
Swift Code: BOFAUS3N

What happens if I want to enroll but cannot pay?

If you enroll in courses via SAGE, but do not complete the payment portion of the enrollment process within 72 hours, your unpaid enrollments may be dropped. If mailing a check or money order, please alert the Summer School Office at summerschool@brandeis.edu so we may preserve your enrollment with a one-week positive enrollment hold. You may then mail the check to: Summer School - MS 085, Brandeis University, PO Box 549110, Waltham, MA 02454-9110.

Be sure to include the name of the student in the memo field of the check. Checks should be made payable to: "Brandeis University".

You can also drop off your check or money order to either the Office of Student Financial Services in Usdan, Room 120 or the Summer School Office at Old South Street, 2nd floor.

What if I am seeking loans via Financial Aid for my summer study?

You must see your financial aid advisor within 72 hrs. to prevent your enrollments from being dropped. The case distribution of aid advisors for Brandeis undergraduates is:

Last name begins with A-G Catherine Nelson x63708
cnelson@brandeis.edu
Last name begins with H-O Mike Ippolito x63707
mippolit@brandeis.edu
Last name begins with P-Z Shannon Glaser
sglaser@brandeis.edu

Students from other colleges and universities who are taking courses at Brandeis for the summer should contact the Financial Aid office of their home institution to inquire about financial aid. If you are seeking financial aid, please inform the Brandeis Summer School Office to prevent your enrollment from being dropped.

What if I am a Brandeis employee or dependent seeking tuition remission for my summer courses?

You should contact the Summer School Office at summerschool@brandeis.edu and we will place a notation on your enrollment in SAGE to preserve your enrollments until the tuition remission is processed.

Course Levels

Courses listed with numbers below 100 are primarily for undergraduate credit. These courses may be counted by a Brandeis degree candidate toward the bachelor's degree but not toward a graduate degree. Graduate students may elect to take these courses but only with the realization that no graduate credit is involved.

Courses listed with numbers 100 or above might carry both graduate and undergraduate credit. Beginning in Summer '07, graduate credit may be available to eligible students in specific courses numbered over 100. Each 100+ course description will designate whether it can or cannot be taken for graduate-level credit. Only instructors who have gone through the approval process, including identification of additional readings and assignments which candidates must satisfactorily complete in order to qualify for graduate-level credit, are permitted to offer graduate credit for their courses. Brandeis graduate students must obtain advance approval in writing from the graduate program head in their department to receive credit toward the graduate degree for appropriately approved summer graduate-level courses and will be expected to pay all tuition and fees applicable in the Summer School. All other graduate students should check with their home institutions in advance should they wish to receive graduate-level credit for courses designated as bearing graduate credit in the Brandeis Summer School. Graduate students enrolled in such a course are required to complete all additional graduate assignments.

Audit

A student wishing to enroll in a course on an audit (noncredit ) basis should contact the Summer School office. A student enrolled on an audit basis is responsible for all fees, attend classes and participate in class discussion. A student enrolled on this basis does not take the final examination or receive a final grade. A student enrolled in a course for credit is expected to do all work required, including the final examination, in order to receive a final grade. There is no difference in tuition cost for students taking courses for Credit or Audit.

Pass/Fail

The Pass/Fail option is chose by filing the specific form for this available either from the University Registrar or from the Summer School.

Undergraduate students may enroll in one course on a pass/fail basis during a given summer. There is no pass/fail option for Brandeis graduate students. No course may be changed from grade to pass/fail after June 13 for Session I and July 18 for Session II. Undergraduates opting to take courses on a pass/fail basis should refer to page 35 of the College of Arts and Sciences academic year Course Offerings Bulletin for 2007-2008.

Courses elected on a pass/fail basis may be converted to a graded basis any time before the 20th day of instruction in the following semester. For students registered in the 2008 Summer School, September 22th will be the last day to change from pass/fail to grade with the Summer School Office.

Repeating Courses

If a passing grade was received when the course was first taken, the Summer School grade appears with zero credits. This grade will not be included in the cumulative grade point average (GPA). If no credits were earned in the first attempt, the Summer School grade and credits appear and are used in GPA calculations. Grades received for courses repeated in the Summer School will not substitute for the grades originally earned.

Summer Course Enrollment Deadlines

Summer School students enrolling in regular summer sessions should select courses and pay their total charges prior to May 23 for Session I and prior to June 27 for Session II. Summer School students may make late course selections between May 23 and June 3 for Session I, and between June 27 and July 8 for Session II, subject to the additional $50 nonrefundable late registration fee.
