Open Enrollment

Admission to the Summer School rests on the assumption that each student knows best what he or she wants and can do. Enrollment is open to a wide cross-section of qualified persons, including students currently enrolled in colleges and universities as well as individuals not currently engaged in any formal educational program, but who hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. High school students who have completed their Junior year of High School are also eligible to register in the Summer School.

Online Course Registration

Online enrollment through SAGE is open to:

  • Current Brandeis Undergraduates in good financial standing
  • Current Brandeis Graduate students in good financial standing
  • Brandeis Alumni and Former Brandeis students
  • Returning visitors and employees
  • Adult learners
  • Students from other college and universities

For Instructions on how to register in SAGE visit this page.

For all others, online enrollment in SAGE is not available. Your enrollment will require paper forms which may be found on the links below. This includes:

How is enrollment in Summer School courses via SAGE different from the academic year?

1) Enrollment in courses result in a nonrefundable $50 registration fee. There is no "shopping period" for summer courses. Submit your course selections only when you are certain you will be attending the Brandeis Summer School.

2) By registering for Brandeis Summer School classes, you are making a financial commitment. Online enrollment through SAGE presumes immediate payment online, or within 72 hours of registration. If you are unable to make payment as soon as you enroll, please wait to enroll until you can complete payment. If payment is not complete within 72 hours or enrollment, you will be asked to withdraw from your courses and re-enroll when payment is possible.

A tuition bill for your summer charges will not be sent to your billing address. You are expected to review your Student Account in SAGE and make appropriate payment arrangements. Your options for paying for summer charges can be found below.

3) Beginning in Summer '06, Brandeis degree candidates who enroll in Summer School courses will automatically have a new, non-degree career created for them in SAGE. When you log into SAGE after enrolling, you will see the new academic career under your existing Student ID. The new career will hold your summer courses separate from other degree work for two important reasons: you will get to decide whether you want the courses rolled over to your undergraduate degree; and, under the University's new residency requirement, this device will provide the University Registrar method for auditing how many summer courses you have applied to your undergraduate degree. At the end of the summer, you will be contacted by the University Registrar and asked to confirm which of your summer courses should be carried over to your undergraduate record.

How do I pay for my summer charges?

There are four main ways to pay :

  • CREDIT CARD THROUGH TMS - A request for payment by credit card is built into the SAGE enrollment process. You can pay by MasterCard, Discover or American Express by selecting the "Make Payment through TMS Gateway" link. PLEASE NOTE: There is a 2%-4% service charge on payments made credit card. Also, Visa cards are not accepted. The charge will appear as "TMS Gateway" on your credit card statement.

  • U.S. BANK ACCOUNT TRANSFER THROUGH TMS - You may also use the TMS system to perform a free Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and have money transferred from your U.S. checking or savings account to pay for your summer classes. There is no charge for Electronic Fund Transfers through TMS.

You may also return to SAGE and view and pay your account balance with TMS by visiting:
Home > SA Self Service > Student Services > Finances > Financial Services.

If you have technical problems with the Tuition Management Systems (TMS) site, you can call TMS at 1-800-722-4867. The TMS monthly payment plan is not available for summer.
  • CHECK OR MONEY ORDER SENT TO BRANDEIS -You may also drop off a check or money order to either the Office of Student Financial Services or the Summer School Office. Be sure to include the name of the student in the memo field of the check. Checks should be made payable to: "Brandeis University". If mailing a check, please e-mail the Summer School office at summerschool@brandeis.edu with your name and SAGE ID number so we know that your tuition payment will be arriving shortly. Your check should be mailed to:

Summer School - MS 085
Brandeis University
PO Box 549110
Waltham, MA 02454-9110

  • STUDENT LOANS -If you are a current Brandeis undergraduate and qualify for loans as confirmed by your financial aid advisor in Student Financial Services, a notation is added to your financial record to prevent you from being dropped from your courses before loan funds are received.

What if I am a Brandeis employee or dependent seeking tuition remission for my summer courses?

You should email the Summer School Office at summerschool@brandeis.edu for specific instructions on how to preserve your enrollments in SAGE.

Course Levels

Courses listed with numbers below 100 are primarily for undergraduate credit. These courses may be counted by a Brandeis degree candidate toward the bachelor's degree but not toward a graduate degree. Graduate students may elect to take these courses but only with the realization that no graduate credit is involved.

Courses listed with numbers 100 or above might carry both graduate and undergraduate credit. Beginning in Summer '07, graduate credit may be available to eligible students in specific courses numbered over 100. Each 100+ course description will designate whether it can or cannot be taken for graduate-level credit. Only instructors who have gone through the approval process, including identification of additional readings and assignments which candidates must satisfactorily complete in order to qualify for graduate-level credit, are permitted to offer graduate credit for their courses. Brandeis graduate students must obtain advance approval in writing from the graduate program head in their department to receive credit toward the graduate degree for appropriately approved summer graduate-level courses and will be expected to pay all tuition and fees applicable in the Summer School. All other graduate students should check with their home institutions in advance should they wish to receive graduate-level credit for courses designated as bearing graduate credit in the Brandeis Summer School. Graduate students enrolled in such a course are required to complete all additional graduate assignments.

Credit or Noncredit

A student wishing to enroll in a course on a noncredit (XC) basis should contact the Summer School office. A student enrolled on an XC basis is responsible for all fees, attend classes and participate in class discussion. A student enrolled on this basis does not take the final examination or receive a final grade. A student enrolled in a course for credit is expected to do all work required, including the final examination, in order to receive a final grade. There is no difference in tuition cost for students taking courses for Credit or Noncredit / Audit.

Pass/Fail

The Pass/Fail option is chose by filing the specific form for this available either from the University Registrar or from the Summer School.

Undergraduate students may enroll in one course on a pass/fail basis during a given summer. There is no pass/fail option for Brandeis Graduate students. No course may be changed from grade to pass/fail after June 12 for Session I and July 17 for Session II. Undergraduates opting to take courses on a pass/fail basis should refer to page 35 of the College of Arts and Sciences academic year Course Offerings Bulletin for 2008-2009.

Courses elected on a pass/fail basis may be converted to a graded basis any time before the 20th day of instruction in the following semester. For students registered in the 2009 Summer School, September 17th will be the last day to change from pass/fail to grade with the Summer School Office.

Repeating Courses

If a passing grade was received when the course was first taken, the Summer School grade appears with zero credits. This grade will not be included in the cumulative grade point average (GPA). If no credits were earned in the first attempt, the Summer School grade and credits appear and are used in GPA calculations. Grades received for courses repeated in the Summer School will not substitute for the grades originally earned.

Summer Course Enrollment Deadlines

Summer School students enrolling in regular summer sessions should select courses and pay their total charges prior to May 22 for Session I and prior to June 26 for Session II. Summer School students may make late course selections between May 22 and June 2 for Session I, and between June 26 and July 7 for Session II. You will need to contact the Summer School Office to make these late course selections and will be subject to an additional $50 late registration fee.
