Subject: Power Outage
On Friday night at approximately 6:30 p.m. the university experienced an
on-campus power outage. Preliminary evaluation indicates that it occurred
as a result of the failure of one phase connection of a transformer at the
Science Complex and it took down two high voltage (13,800KV) supply
circuits which provide electricity to the following buildings:
Abelson-Bass-Yalem
Bassine
Edison-Lecks
Feldberg*
Foster Biomedical
Gerstenzang
Goldsmith
Rosenstiel*
Sachar International Center*
Usdan Student Center
Rapid response by Facilities Services brought power back on one circuit by
10:00 p.m. (buildings with * above) and the rest of the buildings were on
back on line by 11:00 p.m.. At the electrical shut down scheduled for
August 14th, one of these supply lines is scheduled to be replaced and the
transformer which precipitated this problem will be overhauled.
The loss of voltage and then power at Feldberg resulted in a number of
hardware failures which brought the web site down for a period of time and
resulted in the need to replace some electronic components. As a result we
are moving ahead with plans to better isolate Feldberg's power supply and
provide more effective surge protection and consistency of supply.
