Maximum Connections Increases

Three technical annoyances were fixed recently. Please complain to the Help Desk if you are still seeing any sort of technical problems.
  1. There should be no more "connection refused" messages from the POP or IMAP servers (for people reading mail with Eudora/Netscape/Outlook/whatever). The problem was that by default, inetd interprets more than 40 hits per minute as a possible attack and temporarily throttles the port. Some time last month we started exceeding that rate regularly. We have seen no problems since raising the limit in response to an offhand comment at one of the focus groups.

  2. There should be no more unspecified "AppleTalk errors" connecting to the Undergrad server in the UNet AppleTalk zone. Again the problem was a low default limit about which no one seems to have complained. This was fixed around 6pm. My apologies to the three people we disconnected at the moment we restarted the service; the sessions looked like they'd been left idle.

  3. The problems registering new computers last night and early this morning were the result of a network equipment reconfiguration with an unanticipated side effect. About this we did get several helpful complaints, thanks. In the unlikely event the same kind of thing happens again, the web page will give you a more helpful error message.
