No IMAPs
[Digression: If you ever want to read old system news again, run
news -ap or browse https://unet.brandeis.edu/sysnews/ ]
Around a half dozen Macintosh users selected "IMAP server supports encrypted
connections (SSL)" in Netscape preferences. They're now unable to check their
mail.
We were running such a server on a test basis, but for stability and load
reasons it has been turned off. Normal IMAP and POP connections (without the
SSL checkbox selected) should be working fine.
Each port on the dorm networks has a dedicated switch port, so encryption
should not be necessary from there. If you are dialing in from a less secure
network, the only supported solution for now is to use Pine in an SSH session.
An additional UNsupported (possibly unstable) solution is web-based email
through MailMan:

If you're a hacker who'd like to help bring a web-based email gateway to
production status, email root. Each of the gateways we've evaluated (IMP,
AtDot, foodora, and MailMan) has problems which we don't have time to fix.
In addition to the satisfaction of a job well done, some compensation could
be negotiated.
