Connecting an IBM-Compatible PC from Off-Campus:

UNet provides a dial-up number for undergraduates who would like to connect to the undergraduate servers by using a terminal program. This allows you to check your mail using PINE, access the Brandeis Directory, and use all the other services we normally offer when telnetting into the servers. You will not be able to use Netscape, FTP, or other Internet services. See below for more information.

The UNet Dial-Up Number: 781-736-4845
(You do not need the 781 if making a local call, or the 781-73 if making an on-campus call).

To dial in to the undergraduate servers, you need a modem and a terminal program. Any modem from 14.4 kbps to 56 kbps that works with your computer is fine. The terminal programs for Windows 95/98 computers that we support are called HyperTerminal, which comes with Windows, and NetTerm. Documentation can be found at the Help Desk and on the Documentation Page.

UNet does not provide Internet connectivity for users who live off-campus. In order to connect to the Internet using a Web browser (Netscape), FTP, or other methods, you will need to contact an Internet Service Provider (ISP). Dial-up service using a modem usually costs around $20 per month. Faster service with a cable modem, ISDN, or xDSL is also available but will cost more per month. It may be necessary to buy hardware, such as a modem or Ethernet card, in order to connect to the ISP; this information will be available from the ISP you choose.

NOTE: Make sure the ISP has a dial-up number which is a local call from where you live. Otherwise, you may have to pay long-distance charges to the phone company as well.

UNet does not recommend any of the ISPs in the Waltham area over others. For your information, however, some ISPs which offer service in the Waltham / Boston area can be found at FindAnISP's Waltham Directory. Cable Modems are provided by MediaOne.
