1999 UNet Updates

Information for Programmers

The general-purpose UNet servers sam & diane have compliers and interpreters for C/C++, Fortran, Java, Python, Perl, and a few more obscure languages installed. Because load never became a problem last semester, we're no longer discouraging their use as a rule.

However, large-scale projects, and anything making heavy use of system resources, should be developed on the cs.brandeis.edu workstations or your own personal computer instead. 3,000 people depend on only two machines here; please be considerate.

The X Window System binaries continue to be masked because X too easily becomes a resource hog. Other than that, everything you need should be easy to find. For help with the C/C++/Fortran environment, read "info gcc"; for help with the Java interpreter, read "man kaffe".

No programming support will be available from UNet staff. This is all provided on an "as is" basis for non-CS majors taking introductory classes.
