Women's and Gender Studies Board Biographies


Cindy S. Aron Cindy S. Aron is a professor of history at the University of Virginia specializing in the history of American women.  She is the author of numerous publications, including, most recently, Working at Play: A History of Vacations in the United States.  She is currently writing a book on the history of prostitution in the United States from 1945 to 1980.


Deborah FirstDeborah First, a Senior Consultant with Fleishman-Hillard, has over twenty years of experience in strategic marketing and communications.  In addition to serving as Co-chair of the WGS Board, First is a trustee of the Handel and Haydn Society, former Board chair of Judge Baker Children’s Center, a member of the President’s Commission at Wheaton College and serves on the Executive Council steering committee of the Women’s Cancers Program at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.  She holds a B.A. degree in English from Wheaton College and a M.Ed. from Boston College.

Esther KartiganerEsther Kartiganer, Brandeis ’59, has served on the WGS Board since its inception and is currently its Co-chair.  She recently retired from CBS News after a 40 year career; the last 23 of those years spent as a Producer and Senior Producer at 60 Minutes.  Her notable projects at 60 Minutes include a segment on the dangerous and sometimes fatal use of sulfites that led to new FDA regulations and one of the first network news stories on shaken baby syndrome. She has been the recipient of 13 Emmy awards.

Hinda Shuman Marcus is President and CEO of Arnold Industries, Inc., a distributorship specializing in the management and distribution of electromechanical components and fasteners.  She is the treasurer of Futures for Children, a non-profit organization aiding in the education of Native American children, serves on the Board of Hebrew Senior Life, and is involved in several other humanitarian and cultural organizations.  Her interests include art, music, theater, travel, and sports.  Ms. Shuman graduated from Boston University with a B.A. degree and also is certified as a paralegal.

Barbara Perlmutter recently retired as senior vice president of Public Affairs for Marsh & McLennan Companies, Inc., a worldwide professional services firm providing risk and insurance services, investment management and consulting.  Perlmutter is a graduate of Smith College and received an M.A. in history from Columbia University and an M.B.A. in economics, with distinction, from New York University.  Perlmutter is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a board member of The Jewish Museum, a vice chairman of Women In Need, and a Fellow of Brandeis University.

Letty Cottin PogrebinLetty Cottin Pogrebin has been a writer, editor, activist, and lecturer with a special interest in women's issues, family politics, and Jewish ethics. She is a founding editor of Ms. Magazine and the author of nine books.  She holds many honors including an Emmy Award for her work on "Free to Be, You and Me," and a Poynter Fellowship from Yale University.  Currently president of The Authors Registry, she serves on the Directors Council of the Harvard Divinity School’s Women in Religion Program, and on the governing board of the Ms. Foundation for Education and Communication. She is also a past chair of Americans for Peace Now and a past president of The Authors Guild.

Brian Saber graduated from Brandeis in 1984 with a BA in Economics.  He earned an MBA from the University of Chicago and a Masters in Architecture from the University of Illinois.  Brian has spent his entire career in the non-profit sector, including almost six years as the Midwest Director of Development for Brandeis University.  He is currently Executive Director of Hudson Guild, a social service agency in New York City.  Brian's volunteer involvement with Brandeis has included serving at President of the Chicago Alumni Chapter, member of the National Alumni Board of Directors, and co-chair of his 15th college reunion.   In 1994, in memory of his father, Brian established the Richard Saber Undergraduate Research Grant in Women's Studies.  That same year he was the recipient of the Young Alumni Achievement Award.

Jeri WaxenbergJeri Waxenberg is involved in national philanthropic activities, serving as President of her own foundation and Board member of several family foundations. Residing in Sun Valley, Idaho, she serves on the National Advisory Boards for the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and The Boise Art Museum.  Waxenberg also serves on the Board of Directors for the Audubon House and Gardens in Key West, Florida.  She is a past member of The Museums Access/Heritage & Preservation Panel for the National Endowment for the Arts.  A collector of Modernist women artists, Waxenberg has produced two catalogues of original scholarship that document her collection.
