Susan and Barton Winokur Endow Professorship in Economics and WGS

The importance of economics to social justice surely goes without saying.  Yet economists are unusual among women's studies faculties, and gender specialists unusual in departments of economics. Thanks to the generosity of Susan and Barton Winokur, Brandeis is about to become one of the rare universities in which an economist will be a senior member of both the Department of Economics and the Women's and Gender Studies Program. We are delighted to announce the Susan and Barton Winokur Chair in Economics and Women’s and Gender Studies, a professorship that will bring to Brandeis an outstanding scholar and teacher whose research focuses on key issues in the economics of gender.

The Winokurs are longtime friends of Brandeis and of WGS.  Susan Winokur is a founding member of the Women’s and Gender Studies Program Board and serves as chair of its nominations committee.  Bart Winokur is a member and former chair of the Brandeis Board of Trustees.  The chair is an ideal match between their interests and their assessment of Brandeis’s needs.  Home to the largest undergraduate major on campus, the Economics Department will now be able to offer courses on such topics as wage gaps, family economics, and global development.  WGS, in turn, will be able to offer economics education within the framework of interdisciplinary women’s studies.  We look forward to announcing the recipient of the Winokur Chair when the search is completed.
