Undergraduate Grants and Prizes

Undergraduate students are eligible to apply for the following annual grants and prizes that are administered by the Women's and Gender Studies Program. The grant and prize recipients are recognized at the Women’s and Gender Studies commencement ceremony in May. Please see each prize description for eligibility requirements, application details and deadlines.

Additionally, undergraduate students with an interest in women’s rights, human rights, creative arts, or advocacy may want to explore applying for the Ellen (Ilana) Raskin ’75 Memorial Award.


Phoebe and Dr. Donald Giddon Grant for Research on Women and Health ($500)

This grant, established by Phoebe and Dr. Donald Giddon, is awarded to the undergraduate or graduate project deemed best able to contribute new knowledge or understanding to a topic concerning women and health.

Giller-Sagan WGS Senior Paper Prize ($250)

This prize, for an exceptional senior project, was established by Frimi and Eli Sagan in honor of Sadie Giller and Esther Sagan, the grandmothers of Susannah Sagan '81.

Esther Kartiganer Prize for Excellence in Journalism and Women's and Gender Studies ($250)

To honor the distinguished career of Esther Kartiganer '59, a pioneer in broadcast journalism who became a senior executive producer at CBS News, the Women's and Gender Studies Program faculty has established the Kartiganer Prize for outstanding undergraduate work in the field of journalism and women's and gender studies.  All undergraduate Brandeis University students are eligible to apply.

Chris Lerman Prize for Essays on Extraordinary Women ($1000)

This award was established by Jeanette Lerman ’69, to honor her mother and encourage research and scholarship about ordinary women who lived extraordinary lives. All Brandeis graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to submit an essay on an inspiring woman.

Rapaporte Foundation Summer Internship Grants ($2000)

Established in 2004 by the Rapaporte Foundation, this grant enables students to pursue an otherwise unpaid summer internship in an organization or project that serves the interests of women, girls, or gender equity. All Brandeis undergraduates who are under financial necessity to earn summer income are eligible to apply. Grants of $2,000 each are awarded to five undergraduate students in the spring of each year.

Ellen (Ilana) Raskin ’75 Memorial Award

This award was created in 1997 by Judy Blumenthal Asuleen ‘75 and Richard K. Raskin in memory of Ellen (Ilana) Raskin ’75. It is awarded annually to a rising sophomore or junior who qualifies for financial aid and who has made a creative contribution to community or society in the form of women’s rights, human rights, creative arts, or advocacy.
